Johnson City Club Topper

History

The Binghamton Philatelic Society was organized in 1933. Federation historical records show a listing for the group. Delegates Donald Wheeler and Kenneth Cook represented the society at the federation’s March 17, 1940 founding meeting. One of our present members, Walt McNulty, was society secretary. The society met originally in the Hotel Bennett then in the Arlington Hotel. Both structures have been since taken down and turned into parking lots. The membership, at one point, was upward of 100 strong. Its president was Don Burgess, and a man by the name of Burt O’Connell, a cement dealer, who was also very active in club activities according to McNulty.

The society had many lawyers, bankers, doctors, etc, in their field of membership. It was later renamed the Johnson City Stamp Club. Although the club was disbanded several years ago, the stamp shows it put on are well remembered, as were some of the collections that their members put together.
